Proper Matches, Proper Chat
We witnessed yet another exciting Premier League round a couple of days ago. The matchweek opened with a game between Chelsea and Luton Town who are yet to play on their home ground. The Blues beat the guests 3:0, a game in which Raheem Sterling excelled and showed yet again how he’s far from finished. Some other good news for Chelsea fans is that Nicolas Jackson managed to score his first league goal for the club – we’ll see how far his goal tally can go this season. The Hatters will, as we mentioned before keep struggling this season, but we have yet to see what they can do at their home ground.
The first Saturday game saw two goals. Spurs managed to beat Bournemouth away by 0:2. We’ve witnessed yet another classic Angeball orchestrated by none other than James Maddison who contributed with the opening goal. The second one was scored by Dejan Kulusevski. The Swede is yet to reach his full potential and prove himself in the Premier League. The Cherries on the other hand showed a solid performance and will probably be among the best ones in the relegation-battle group.
There were four 3:00 PM games in total. The first one saw Manchester United host former European champions Nottingham Forest. The guests managed to shock everyone at Old Trafford after Awoniyi and Boly scored two quick goals in the first four minutes of the game. Manchester United managed to come back, reverse the score, and beat the Forest 3:2 with goals from Eriksen, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes. It seems like the Red Devils have a long way to go, while Nottingham should, just like Cherries, not struggle as much in the relegation battle last season the same way they did the last one.
It’s more than obvious that this might be the season when Everton will finally go down since 1951. The Toffees have yet to end their goalless misery and after losing to a direct relegation rival at home, there definitely aren’t that many positives to look forward to. Sure, Everton played without a proper striker, and their expected goal stat is quite high when it comes to the other teams in the league, but is the latest arrival of Beto the solution to the problem – time will tell. Wolves have found themselves a proper replacement for Raúl Jiménez in Saša Kalajdžić who arrived last season but failed to play more than one league game due to a serious injury. He was the one who scored the match-winner and with his help, Wolverhampton will be quite a competitor in the relegation battle.
Brentford and Crystal Palace drew 1:1 at Brentford Community Stadium. A game that maybe wasn’t as thrilling as some others in this round had its moments. The final result might not be that shocking, but the Bees were slight favorites before the kick-off. Goals were scored by Schade for the hosts, while the Eagles equalized through Andersen. Both teams share similar qualities and will most likely finish this season mid-table as it stands.
It still might be way too early to say that Arsenal have already lost the title race, but after managing to draw against a mid-table contender at home, it’s becoming clearer that Manchester City will once more clinch the title in June next year. After conceding in the first half, Arsenal managed to turn the result around. Bassey got sent off in the 83rd minute for Fulham, but Palhinha managed to equalize a couple of minutes later and prove once again why he is a fan favorite. Even with ten men on the pitch, Fulham managed to get a point – a point that might prove to be crucial for the Gunners in their title fight.
We witnessed yet another shocking result, but this time at Amex Stadium. As impressive as their start of the season was, nobody expected them to lose at home to West Ham and concede three goals in the process. West Ham had an impressive performance even without their key man from the past couple of seasons – Declan Rice, and proved why they might be able to compete for a European spot this season. Brighton, on the other hand, will most likely recover from this sooner or later, but the top-four finish might be in question now. The final result was 1:3.
It was expected that Manchester City to, for lack of a better term, thrash Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, but the final result proved to be far from an easy win. The reigning champions managed to beat the Blades 1:2 with a late match-winner from Rodri – the Champions League final hero. After missing a penalty, Haaland managed to score in the second half. Sheffield United equalized in the 85th minute through Bogle and it was only a couple of minutes later when Rodri got all three points for the guests. If the Blades manage to keep their composure in their upcoming games as they did in this one, they will most likely give a hard time to the relegation-battle opposition. When it comes to City, this should be a warning sign not to relax and keep their head in the game.
Burnley hosted Aston Villa at Turf Moore in a 1:3 win for the guests. Villa took an early lead in the eighth minute and scored another one twelve minutes later. Both goals were scored by Polish international Matty Cash. Lyle Foster scored the first and the only goal for the Clarets while Moussa Diaby, the latest summer signing for Villa, scored the third one and secured three points. This was a battle between a relegation-battle side and a club that would try their best to clinch a European spot. Both teams are exciting to watch, and neutral fans will be keeping an eye on both Burnley and Villa.
The final game of the round was the most exciting one by far. Liverpool managed to beat Newcastle United at St James’ Park in a 1:2 thriller. Magpies scored first through Anthony Gordon in the 25th minute. The crucial part of the game came a couple of minutes later when Virgil van Dijk got a straight red. Klopp and Tindall exchanged a few words on the sidelines after the Liverpool’s captain got sent off. A moment that became quite iconic right after the game. The Reds managed to come back and score two goals through a substitute – Darwin Núñez who came on in the 77th minute and scored the goals in the 81st and the 93rd minute respectively. Newcastle still seems like a solid top-four candidate, but this was a much more needed win for the guests who will look to improve on their last season’s finish.
