League Two Wrexham’s Surprising 5:0 Defeat at Stockport

An Unexpected High-Scoring Game

It’s not unusual that we see a high-scoring game whenever Wrexham plays. If we take a look at their last five league games, we’ll see that their goal tally was nineteen – or to be more exact, 3.8 goals per game. Many expected this game to be a fruitful one, but was it really expected for the Red Dragons to concede five?

Wrexham are currently enjoying their spell in League Two after a couple of seasons of struggling to promote to EFL from the National League. Phil Parkinson’s squad has scored the same amount of goals as they conceded this season – twenty. They started the new campaign quite well, considering the fact that there’s a huge gap between the fourth and fifth tier of English football.

Climbing the Ranks: Wrexham’s Current Standing

Wrexham currently sit at the seventh place which grants them a spot in the playoffs for League One. They are only five points behind the league leaders – Notts County – who have accumulated twenty points so far. On the other hand, Wrexham have managed to amass fifteen points, with four wins, three draws, and only two losses. The battle for the top seven will be quite hard considering the fact that Wimbledon, Milton Keynes, and this weekend’s rivals, Stockport, are all at the fourteen-point mark.

Safe from Relegation? Wrexham’s Positioning

When it comes to the relegation battle, it’s quite possible that Wrexham shouldn’t worry about that this season. While some would say that it’s a bit early to tell that the Welsh outfit is in the safe zone, it’s somewhat obvious that Sutton and Tranmere, alongside Forest Green, Colchester, and even Salford (owned by Project 92 Limited, or to be more exact, Peter Lim and ex-Premier League superstars like David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, and Paul Scholes) are the ones in the spotlight when it comes to the relegation battle.

Squad Reinforcement: Arrival of New Talent

Compared to the previous campaign, the squad is somewhat more complete now – with the arrival of the experienced Steven Fletcher. The Scotsman has been an integral part of several Premier League clubs such as Wolves and Sunderland five to ten years ago. While Fletcher has been far from the Premier League level for some time now, one thing is sure, the veteran has much to offer after a solid season at Dundee United who, even with his contribution of nine league goals, failed to avoid relegation in the Scottish Premiership. Some other interesting names who have joined the club are Arthur Okonkwo who has joined on loan from Arsenal and George Evans who has joined from Millwall as a free agent.

Turning the Tables: Stockport’s Unexpected Victory

The most shocking thing when it comes to Saturday’s result would be the fact that, before the game, the odds were quite even. This will most likely be a huge morale boost for the Hatters since they were not considered favorites before the game.

Crucial Upcoming Matches: Deciding the Season

Wrexham’s next three games might be the ones that will decide their season. They are playing three teams that are all ahead of them – Crewe at home (who they’ll also play in around three weeks in the EFL Trophy), and Mansfield and Crawley away. If they manage to get at least two out of three wins in those next three games, it will be safe to say that Wrexham will be considered strong League One promotion contenders.
