FLEETWOOD, ENGLAND - Jamie Vardy exults in jubilation after netting a pivotal goal for Fleetwood Town in their clash against Blackpool at the iconic Highbury Stadium.

It always makes for a great story when a lower-league talent makes it big. The allure of underdog stories in football is undeniable. They are easy to root for because the path these players go through is not easy. These journeys from lower leagues to stardom not only inspire fans but also remind us that talent can emerge from the most unexpected places, proving that with grit and opportunity, anything is possible on the football pitch.

Adding to the mystique, these underdog stories often serve as a social equalizer, showing that irrespective of background or resources, sheer willpower and skill can write history. Let’s take a look at some of the stories of some local heroes who made it big.

1.   Jamie Vardy – Leicester City

Starting with the greatest underdog story. Jamie Vardy is a true example of earning your stripes to make it big and boy did he make it big!

Jamie Vardy started his career with Stocksbridge Park Steels for a paltry £30. He started his career in the 8th division and slowly moved upwards, first with Halifax Town where he helped the club win the Northern Premier League.

Fleetwood Town, who were a Conference Premier Club then, bought Jamie Vardy. Vardy scored 31 goals and helped Fleetwood gain promotion to the Football League. Leicester City bought Vardy for 1m and that is where he hit it big.

Leicester were in the championship when Jamie Vardy helped them get into the Premier League. Here comes the greatest underdog story in the history of the Premier League. Leicester City were expected to get relegated after just about surviving the drop in the previous season.

Leicester weren’t fancied, Vardy wasn’t fancied, Ranieri wasn’t fancied. Guess what happened? Leicester against all odds WON the Premier League title with Vardy spearheading the attack. Vardy even got to play in the Champions League with Leicester, not only that, he also won the FA Cup with the Foxes.

His loyalty also needs a word here – he was strongly linked with a move away with Arsenal even triggering his release clause but Vardy stayed with the Foxes. He is still with the club despite them getting relegated last season. What a guy!

2.   Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu – Luton Town

Jamie Vardy 2.0 but without the Premier League title. Mpanzu has a unique record to his name. He is the only player to go from non-league to the Premier League with the same club.

Mpanzu was signed by John Still from West Ham initially on loan and then permanently. Pelly Mpanzu has been with Luton Town ever since. He has ascended the ladder of the English Football League step-by-step.

Mpanzu currently has 322 league appearances for Luton Town scoring 23 goals in the process. He has a Conference and League One title to his name and a Championship Play-off trophy to show for his efforts with the Hatters.

3.   Glenn Murray – Brighton and Hove Athletic

Although Glenn Murray started making his name with Carlisle United, it was with Brighton that he is more renowned. Glenn Murray has scored goals at every level of the English Football League.

Starting with non-league Carlisle United, Murray then moved to Rochdale where he averaged a goal every other game. He then signed for League One side Brighton where he also averaged almost a goal every other game.

Murray then moved up the ladder and joined Crystal Palace in the championship where he spent three years. Murray gained promotion to the Premier League with Palace but missed most of the games through injuries.

After a spell at Reading in Championship and Bournemouth in the Premier League, Murray rejoined Brighton in Championship for regular football. He gained yet another promotion to the Premier League this time with Brighton. He was a mainstay at the club, scoring 34 goals in 115 appearances and also reaching the FA Cup semi-final with the Seagulls.

4.   Ashley Williams – Swansea City

As influential a captain as you are likely to see in the lower leagues of English Football! Ashley Williams started at non-league Hednesford United before making a move to League Two side Stockport County.

Williams then made the move to Swansea City where he would go on to become the captain of the side and gain promotion from League One to Championship and then from Championship to the Premier League. Williams also captained Swansea to the 2012-13 League Cup win. His first and only major trophy.

Ashley Williams would later go on to play for Everton, Stoke, and Bristol City.
